Rounding with Carrying to the Next Place

When the digit in the target place value is 9{9} and the digit to its right is 5{5} or greater, adding 1{1} produces 10{10}, which requires carrying 1{1} to the next higher place. For example, to round $103{,}978tothenearesthundred:thehundredsdigitisto the nearest hundred: the hundreds digit is{9}andthedigittoitsrightisand the digit to its right is{7}. Since $7 \geq 5, add 1{1} to 9{9}, yielding 10{10}. Replace 9{9} with 0{0} and carry 1{1} to the thousands place, changing 3{3} to 4{4}. Replace the tens and ones digits with zeros. The result is $104{,}000$.
