In Hujwiri's chapter on sama (spiritual audition) in Kashf al-Mahjub, the intense effect of hearing the Quran recited is illustrated through accounts of devout listeners whose souls departed the instant they heard a verse. Figures such as Wazira ibn Abi Awfa, Abu Juhayr, and an unnamed old woman of Kufa are described as crying out and yielding their lives at the moment of audition. These anecdotes present the overpowering ecstatic state (ghalaba-yi hal / wajd) as the extreme limit of sincere listening: the truth heard overwhelms the self so completely that the listener passes away in the encounter. The concept teaches that, for the realized listener, sama is not entertainment but a direct confrontation with divine reality that can consume the hearer.
