Screening and Severity of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Children in Madrid, Spain
By March 16th, 2020, in Madrid, Spain, 0.8% of the confirmed cases were children under the age of 18 (41 of 4695 cases). The median age of children with positive results was 1 (interquartile range: 0.35-8.5, range: 0-15). 25 children with confirmed COVID-19 were hospitalized (60% of children), 4 were admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) (9.7% of children), and 4 required additional respiratory support past nasal prongs (9.7%). No patients died, and only 1 of the 4 patients (25%) requiring additional respiratory support had a preexisting condition (recurrent wheezing).
