Self-Determination Theory in Learning
Self-Determination Theory (SDT) proposes that intrinsic motivation is more successful for learning than controlled motivation, as it encourages students to demonstrate competence and achieve self-esteem. While rewards contingent on performance or engagement can undermine intrinsic motivation, unexpected rewards and positive verbal feedback have been shown to increase it.
