Shabestari's Sufi Interpretation of Christianity and the Monastery
In Section 61 of Golshan-e Raz, Mahmud Shabestari provides the esoteric meaning of "Christianity" (Tarsaei) and the "monastery" (Dair) in Sufism. He interprets Christianity as tajrid—absolute detachment from the ego and worldly ties—and liberation from taqlid (blind imitation). The monastery is symbolically reinterpreted as the sacred threshold of Divine Unity (Vahdat). Shabestari also uses the figure of Jesus (Ruh-Allah, the Spirit of God) to represent the divine spark present within every human being. By realizing and purifying this inner spirit, the seeker can transcend the material realm and ascend to divine proximity.
