Slavery Still in Effect: Lamentables of a Women's Health Advocate
In the article "Slavery Still in Effect: Lamentables of a Women's Health Advocate" Marlene Braxton Fischer discussed how the "strong Black woman" stereotype impacted Black women's health. Fischer points out that while the stereotype has been used within Black communities to demonstrate the enormous hardships of sexism and racism faced by Black women this stereotype can be used to paint Black women as inherently healthy and erase the health effects of slavery. This myth, as discussed by Fischer, continued to follow Black women with the dismissal of health concerns of Black women and the lack of inclusion of Black women in pharmaceutical trials.
