Social Dilemmas and Inefficient Market Provision of Public Goods

The social dilemmas inherent in public good scenarios, such as the incentive to free-ride, often lead to inefficient outcomes in a market system. If communities cannot resolve these dilemmas through collective action, public goods are likely to be underprovided. In extreme cases, the market may fail completely, resulting in the good not being provided at all without government intervention.
