Social technology includes:
- 1) Traditional social technology (i.e. emails, phones, instant messengers, etc.)

- 2) Emerging social networking technology (i.e. major public social networking sites, blogs, wikis, and enterprise social networking technologies employed behind firewalls etc.)

Social technology classification

Social technologies face two key dimensions: competition and interoperability.
- Competition is how social technologies fight for relevance among their users based on functionality and effectivity. 
- Interoperability is how social technologies work in tandem to provide an experience that couldn't be accomplished with a single technology alone.
