Solutions of a System of Equations

The solutions of a system of equations are the values of the variables that make all of the equations in the system true simultaneously. For a system of two linear equations in two variables, a solution is an ordered pair (x,y)(x, y) that satisfies both equations. Unlike a single linear equation in two variables — which has infinitely many solutions forming an entire line — a system requires the ordered pair to lie on every line in the system at the same time.
