Specialization in Non-Market Contexts

The principle of specialization, or the division of labor, is not confined to economic activities within markets and firms. It is also a fundamental organizing feature in other social structures, such as governments and families. Within a family, for example, household chores and responsibilities are often allocated among members based on conventions related to age and gender.
