Specific Memory Deficits and Preserved Skill Learning in the Case of H.M.

Following the removal of his hippocampus and amygdala, Henry Molaison (H.M.) demonstrated a stark separation between different memory functions. He lost the ability to learn new facts, such as who was president of the United States, and could not remember new faces or events even immediately after they occurred. However, he was still able to learn new motor skills (such as learning to use a computer), though he afterward had absolutely no conscious recollection or memory of ever having learned or used them.
