Spectrum of Animal Research Regulation
Legal and regulatory frameworks for animal testing exist on a spectrum. At one extreme, exemplified by the United Kingdom, is a system of strong government regulation and monitoring. At the other extreme is a self-regulated approach that relies on the ethics of researchers, as seen in Japan. The United States utilizes a hybrid model that falls in the middle of this continuum, combining elements of both governmental oversight and self-regulation.
