Concept

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

An Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a mandatory oversight body for any facility that conducts animal research and receives federal funding. This committee is responsible for ensuring that all experimental proposals require the humane treatment of animal research subjects, adhering to National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines. The IACUC's membership must include scientists, institutional administrators, a veterinarian, and at least one community member with no affiliation to the institution. Key duties of the committee involve reviewing research proposals to ensure compliance before any animal research can commence, and conducting semi-annual inspections of all animal facilities to verify that research protocols are being followed.
