Standardization of Railway Gauges

In the 19th century, different private railway companies in countries like the UK and the US often used different track widths, or gauges. This lack of a standard created significant inefficiencies, as goods and passengers had to be transferred from one train to another at junctions between networks. This coordination failure was resolved when governments mandated a single, standard gauge, which allowed for the creation of a seamless national rail network, greatly facilitating commerce and travel.
