Strategic Foreclosure as a Determinant of Firm Boundaries

Firms with significant market power may expand their boundaries through vertical integration not for efficiency gains, but to strategically foreclose rivals. By acquiring a key supplier or distributor, a dominant firm can deny competitors access to essential inputs or markets, thereby raising rivals' costs, limiting competition, and solidifying its own market position.
