Structure of Euglena
Cells of the genus Euglena are oval-shaped and possess a variety of specialized internal structures. These include a long flagellum located near a light-sensing photoreceptor (paraflagellar body) and a red stigma (eyespot). The cell contains a nucleus with a nucleolus, green chloroplasts for photosynthesis, stored photosynthetic polysaccharides, a contractile vacuole, and a pellicle composed of protein bands that surrounds and supports the cell membrane.
