Study Habits of CS1 Students
In an introductory CS course, Chinn et. al found that male and female students have different studying habits outside of class. Using a Likert-based survey questionnaire and regression analysis / Mann-Whitney U tests, the following trends were observed from their class (n=95):
- Of the total number of respondents, 81% were male, and 19% were female.
- Female students spent more time using the textbook than male students (1.5 hrs vs .9 hrs).
- Female students were more likely to work with other students (U=577.5, p<0.05).
- Female students found "lab solutions" less useful (U=663, P<0.05).
- Attendance, prior knowledge, confidence, course-resource usefulness, and expected grade showed no differences when comparing genders.
