Sub-theme: Family/Friends’ Perspective of Barriers to Care and Unhelpful Experiences
- For family/friends of individuals with eating disorders, help-seeking was initially sought in primary care or community settings such as GP practices and schools, but self-help books, internet resources, support-based organizations or private treatment were where most of the ‘useful help’ was located.
- For some family/friends, primary health professionals were helpful in terms of providing ‘active support’, without blame or judgement.
- Some described ‘thorough and competent’ primary care professionals. However, others found primary care a negative experience, feeling ‘fobbed off’. They reported that primary care professionals lacked eating disorder knowledge and the training required to diagnose and respond to eating disorders.
