Modern history deals with world history since the Middle Ages. Generally, it refers to world history since the beginning of the Age of Reason, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution, in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Military history deals with the history of armed conflict over the course of human history, as well as its impact on the relevant economies, societies, and cultures, plus the corresponding changes to local and international relationships.

U. S. history deals with the history of the United States since its founding, as well as all the events that led to the founding of the United States. The beginnings of U. S. history can be traced back to the arrival of the first Native Americans in ~15000 B. C. The arrival of Christoper Columbus in 1492 A. D. led to permanent European colonization of the Americas.

Molecular studies identified the presence of the Y. pestis plague DNA genome in two Bronze Age skeletons dated at roughly 3800 years old. Scholars have also identified three plague pandemics.

Subcategories of History

A multidisciplinary field of research focuses on researching groups defined by geographic or cultural means. It considers the relationship between politics, history, culture, language, and literature to the people. It is distinguished from cultural studies due to its inclusion of emigration and diaspora in its research.

Area Studies

Oral history is the collection and study of historical information about individuals, families, important events, or everyday life. These interviews are conducted with people who participated in or observed past events and whose memories are to be preserved as a record for future generations. "Oral history strives to obtain information from different perspectives and most of these cannot be found in written sources." Oral history also means information gathered and usually is located in archives and libraries.
