Subtracting $5 - 3andand-5 - (-3)$ with Counters

Using the counter model to visualize subtraction when both numbers share the same sign:

  • **$5 - 3 = 2:Beginwith:** Begin with {5}positive(blue)counters."Takeaway"positive (blue) counters. "Take away"{3}ofthem.Twopositivecountersremain,sothedifferenceisof them. Two positive counters remain, so the difference is{2}$.
  • 5(3)=2-5 - (-3) = -2: Begin with 5{5} negative (red) counters. "Take away" 3{3} of them. Two negative counters remain, so the difference is 2{-2}.

Both problems follow an identical pattern: start with 5{5} counters of one color, remove 3{3} of the same color, and 2{2} counters are left. The sign of the result matches the sign of the counters that remain. Because only one color of counter appears in each problem, no neutral pairs are formed and the take-away interpretation applies directly.
