Example

Subtracting 757 - 5 and 7(5)-7 - (-5) with Counters

Apply the take-away model of subtraction using counters to a pair of same-sign problems:

  • 75=27 - 5 = 2: Start with 77 positives and take away 55 positives. Two positives remain, giving a result of 22.
  • 7(5)=2-7 - (-5) = -2: Start with 77 negatives and take away 55 negatives. Two negatives remain, giving a result of 2-2.

As with the earlier 535 - 3 and 5(3)-5 - (-3) examples, the structure is the same in both cases: remove counters of the same color from a larger collection of that color. The answer carries the sign of the counters that are left.
