Concept

Subtraction Property of Integers

The Subtraction Property states that subtracting a number produces the exact same result as adding its opposite. Mathematically, this property is expressed as:

ab=a+(b)a - b = a + (-b)

For example, evaluating 31-3 - 1 is mathematically identical to computing 3+(1)-3 + (-1). Similarly, subtracting a negative number, such as 3(1)3 - (-1), can be rewritten as the addition of its positive opposite: 3+13 + 1. This equivalence allows any subtraction problem with signed numbers to be reinterpreted as addition, enabling the use of standard integer addition rules to easily evaluate expressions.
