Subtract or Add Strategy in the Counter Model for Integer Subtraction

In the counter model, the approach to subtraction depends on whether you already possess counters of the color being taken away:

  • Enough counters (same sign) — subtract directly: When the minuend and the number being subtracted share the same sign, all counters are the same color and you simply remove the required number. For example, $5 - 3 = 2(remove(remove{3}positivesfrompositives from{5}positives)andpositives) and-5 - (-3) = -2(remove(remove{3}negativesfromnegatives from{5}$ negatives).

  • Not enough counters (different signs) — add instead: When the signs differ, you do not have counters of the needed color to take away. You must introduce neutral pairs to create counters of the required color, which effectively converts the subtraction into an addition. For example, 53=8-5 - 3 = -8 (have negatives but need to remove positives, so add neutral pairs and remove; result is 8{8} negatives) and $5 - (-3) = 8(havepositivesbutneedtoremovenegatives,soaddneutralpairsandremove;resultis(have positives but need to remove negatives, so add neutral pairs and remove; result is{8}$ positives).

The guiding principle is: if the counters match, take away; if they do not match, the operation becomes an addition.
