Subtracting a Negative Integer

When a negative number is subtracted, the subtraction property converts the expression into the addition of a positive number:

a(b)=a+ba - (-b) = a + b

In other words, subtracting a negative is equivalent to adding a positive. This follows from the general rule ab=a+(b)a - b = a + (-b): substituting b-b for the number being subtracted gives a(b)=a+((b))=a+ba - (-b) = a + (-(-b)) = a + b, because the opposite of a negative is positive. For example, $8 - (-5) = 8 + 5 = 13$. This result often surprises students — removing a negative quantity actually increases the overall value.
