Subversion of the Joseph's Shirt Motif in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 41, Poem 11)

In Chapter 41, Poem 11 of Mokhtar Nameh, Attar utilizes the well-known allusion to "the scent of the shirt" (بوی پیرهن), referencing the story of Prophet Joseph (Yusuf), whose shirt miraculously restored the sight of his grieving father, Jacob. However, Attar subverts this traditional motif of healing and joyful reunion. Instead of bringing relief, the scent arrives "without you" (بی تو), which plunges the speaker into "a hundred kinds of sorrow." This subversion effectively underscores the devastating and irreplaceable nature of the beloved's absence.
