Systemic Failures Following Deinstitutionalization

The implementation of deinstitutionalization was flawed due to an inadequately prepared system. The community centers designed to support released individuals were severely underfunded, and staff often lacked the training to handle severe illnesses like schizophrenia. This environment led to high staff burnout and a failure to provide other essential services people needed, such as housing, food, and job training.
