Technological Improvement and Living Standards

A pre-industrial society with a fixed amount of farmland discovers a new, more resilient crop variety. This technological improvement initially leads to a significant increase in the amount of food produced per farmer. However, historical records show that a century later, while the total population has doubled, the average farmer's standard of living (the amount of food they consume) has returned to its original, pre-improvement level. Analyze this outcome. Explain the economic principle that accounts for why the initial improvement in living standards was not sustained as the population grew.
