The Allegory of Absolute Sacrifice in the Tale of the Master and the Barley-Water Seller

In Farid al-Din Attar's 'The Conference of the Birds', the tale of the wealthy master who falls in love with a young barley-water seller serves as an allegory for the spiritual seeker's absolute sacrifice on the path of divine love. The master willingly sells all his properties and worldly wealth, ultimately becoming completely destitute, merely to continuously buy barley-water from the boy. This profound surrender of status, wealth, and rationality illustrates that true love for the Divine requires giving up all material attachments and worldly identities for even the smallest glimpse of the Beloved.
