خواجه ای از خان و مان آواره شد
وز فقاعی کودکی بی چاره شد

شد ز فرط عشق سودایی ازو
گشت سر غوغای رسوایی ازو

هرچ او را بود اسباب و ضیاع
می فروخت و می خرید از وی فقاع

چون نماندش هیچ، بس درویش شد
عشق آن بی دل یکی صد بیش شد

گرچه می دادند نان او را تمام
گرسنه بودی و سیر از جان مدام

زانک چندانی که نانش می رسید
جمله می برد و فقاعی می خرید

دایما بنشسته بودی گرسنه
تا خرد یک دم فقاعی صد تنه

سایلی گفتش که ای آشفته کار
عشق چه بود سر این کن آشکار

گفت آن باشد که صد عالم متاع
جمله بفروشی برای یک فقاع

تا چنین کاری نیفتد مرد را
او چه داند عشق را و درد را

English translation

A master became a wanderer from his home and house, And was made helpless by a boy selling barley-water. From the excess of love, he became melancholic because of him, The secret of his clamorous disgrace became public through him. Whatever he possessed of goods and estates, He would sell and buy barley-water from him. When nothing remained for him, he became very poor, The love of that heart-lost one increased a hundredfold. Though they gave him bread in full, He was always hungry and satiated with life. For as much as bread reached him, He would take it all and buy barley-water. He was constantly sitting hungry, So that he might buy a single drink of barley-water from that hundred-bodied one. A seeker asked him, O you of troubled affairs, What is love? Make this secret clear. He said: It is that you sell a hundred worlds of goods, All of it, for a single drink of barley-water. Until such a thing befalls a man, What does he know of love and of pain?
