The Tale of the Lover Who Slept and the Beloved Reprimanded Him

Original content

English translation

A lover was distraught from the excess of love, Sleeping miserably upon the dust. His beloved came right up to his pillow, And saw him sleeping, once again senseless. She wrote a note, quick and fitting for him, And tied it to her lover's sleeve. When the lover awoke from sleep, He read the note, and wept tears of blood. It was written: 'O silent man, Arise, if you are a merchant, strive for silver. Or if you are a devout ascetic, keep vigil at night, Serve until dawn, and be a true servant. And if you are a lover, have some shame; What does sleep have to do with the eyes of a lover? A lover measures the wind by day, And at night, he measures the moonlight in burning grief. Since you are neither this nor that, O lusterless one, Do not make false boasts of your love for us. If a lover sleeps anywhere but in a shroud, I would call him a lover, but only of himself. Since you have approached love out of ignorance, May you sleep well, for you are unworthy!'
