The Tale of Jacob and the Separation from Joseph

Original content

English translation

When Joseph was separated from his father, Jacob lost his sight from the separation. A sea of blood waved from his eyes; Joseph's name remained forever on his tongue. Gabriel came, saying, 'If ever again Joseph passes upon your tongue, We shall erase your name hereafter From among the prophets and apostles.' When His command came from the Truth then, Joseph's name was erased from his tongue. Although Joseph's name was his companion, He kept his name residing in his soul. One night he saw Joseph before him in a dream; He wanted to call him to himself. He remembered what the Truth had commanded; That bewildered, weary one quickly held his tongue. But from lack of endurance, from his pure soul, He drew out an exceedingly painful sigh. When he stirred from his sweet sleep, Gabriel came, saying, 'God says, Though you did not speak Josephs name on your tongue, Yet you drew a sigh at that moment. Inside your sigh, I know who was present; In truth, you broke your repentance, to what avail?' The intellect is driven mad by this affair; Behold the game that love plays with us!
