The Tale of the Huma
Original content
English translation
The shadow-bestowing Huma came before the assembly, Whose shadow is the source of wealth for kings. That Huma is very auspicious, Because it surpasses all in high aspiration. He said: 'O birds of the sea and land! I am not a bird like other birds. My lofty aspiration has been set to work, My seclusion from the people has become apparent. I hold my dog-like ego in contempt, therefore, Faridun and Jamshid received their glory from me. Kings are nourished by my shadow, Those of beggarly nature are not my men. I give a bone to the dog-like ego, And grant the soul safety from this dog. Since I constantly gave bones to the ego, My soul attained this exalted state. He from the shadow of whose wings kings arise, How can one turn away from his glory? Everyone must sit under his wing, So that a speck of his shadow may be obtained. When will the lofty Simorgh become my companion? Appointing kings is sufficient work for me.' The Hoopoe said to him: 'O you who are bound by pride! Fold up your shadow, do not mock yourself any more. At this time, appointing kings is not your trait, You are like a dog with a bone at this time. I wish you would not appoint kings, And would free yourself from the bone. Let us assume that the kings of the world, All rise from your shadow right now. But tomorrow, in the long tribulation, All will be held back from their kingship. If a monarch had never seen your shadow, How would he be left in trial on the Day of Reckoning?'
