عزم راه کردن مرغان / The Birds Resolve to Journey

چون شنودند این سخن مرغان همه
آن زمان گفتند ترک جان همه

برد سیمرغ از دل ایشان قرار
عشق در جانان یکی شد صد هزار

عزم ره کردند عزمی بس درست
ره سپردن را باستادند چست

جمله گفتند این زمان ما را به نقد
پیشوا یی باید اندر حل و عقد

تا کند در راه ما را رهبری
زانک نتوان ساختن از خودسری

در چنین ره حاکمی باید شگرف
بوک بتوان رست از این دریای ژرف

حاکم خود را به جان فرمان کنم
نیک و بد هرچ او بگوید آن کنم

تا بود کاری ازین میدان لاف
گوی ما افتد مگر تا کوه قاف

ذره در خورشید والا اوفتد
سایهٔ سیمرغ بر ما اوفتد

عاقبت گفتند حاکم نیست کس
قرعه باید زد، طریق اینست و بس

قرعه بر هرک اوفتد سرور بود
در میان کهتران مهتر بود

چون رسید اینجا سخن، کم گشت جوش
جملهٔ مرغان شدند اینجا خموش

چون بدست قرعه شان افتاد کار
درگرفت آن بی قراران را قرار

قرعه افکندند ، بس لایق فتاد
قرعه شان بر هدهد عاشق فتاد

جمله او را رهبر خود ساختند
گر همی فرمود سر می باختند

عهد کردند آن زمان کاو سرور ست
هم درین ره پیشرو هم رهبر ست

حکم حکم اوست، فرمان نیز هم
زو دریغی نیست تن، جان نیز هم

هدهد هادی چو آمد پهلوان
تاج بر فرقش نهادند آن زمان

صد هزاران مرغ در راه آمدند
سایه وان ماهی و ماه آمدند

چون پدید آمد سر وادی ز راه
النفیر از آن نفر برشد به ماه

هیبتی زان راه برجان اوفتاد
آتشی در جان ایشان اوفتاد

برکشیدند آن همه بر یک دگر
چه پر و چه بال و چه پای و چه سر

جمله دست از جان بشسته پاک باز
بار ایشان بس گران و ره دراز

بود راهی خالی السیر ای عجب
ذره ای نه شر نه خیر ای عجب

بود خامشی و آرامش درو
نه فزایش بود نه کاهش درو

سالکی گفتش که ره خالی چراست
هدهدش گفت این ز فریاد شماست

English translation

When all the birds heard these words, At that moment they all renounced their lives. The Simorgh took away the rest from their hearts, Love for the Beloved became a hundred thousand fold. They resolved on the path with a very firm resolve, They stood nimble to traverse the way. They all said, "At this present time, We need a leader for binding and loosening, So that he may guide us on our way, Because one cannot manage through self-will. On such a path, a wondrous ruler is needed, Perhaps then we can be saved from this deep sea. I will obey my ruler with my soul, Good or bad, whatever he says, I will do. So that something may come of this field of boasting, And perhaps our ball may reach Mount Qaf. The mote may fall into the exalted sun, And the shadow of the Simorgh may fall upon us." Ultimately they said, "No one is the ruler, We must draw lots, this is the only way. Whoever the lot falls upon will be the leader, He will be the greater among the lesser ones." When the speech reached this point, the tumult lessened, All the birds became silent here. When their affair fell to the drawing of lots, Those restless ones found peace. They cast the lots, and it fell very aptly, Their lot fell upon the enamored Hoopoe. They all made him their leader, If he commanded, they would sacrifice their heads. They made a pact then that he is the leader, On this path he is both the vanguard and the guide. His ruling is the ruling, and the command as well, Neither body nor soul is withheld from him. When the guiding Hoopoe stepped forward as champion, They placed a crown upon his head at that time. Hundreds of thousands of birds set out on the way, They became a canopy from the fish to the moon. When the beginning of the valley appeared from the path, A cry of distress from that group rose to the moon. An awe from that path fell upon their souls, A fire fell into their souls. They all drew together upon one another, Whether feather, or wing, or foot, or head. All having washed their hands of life, gambling everything, Their burden was very heavy and the path long. It was a path empty of travelers, O wonder! Not an atom of evil nor good, O wonder! There was silence and tranquility in it, Neither increase nor decrease was in it. A seeker said to him, "Why is the path empty?" His Hoopoe said, "This is because of your outcry."
