The Tale of the Murderer Who Went to Paradise
Original content
English translation
A king killed a murderer in punishment; A Sufi happened to see him in a dream, Walking with a smile in the Eden of Paradise, Sometimes joyful, sometimes strutting. The Sufi said to him, 'You were a murderer, You were always in a state of downfall. From where did this high rank appear? Through what you did, one cannot reach this.' He said, 'When my blood flowed on the ground, Habib al-Ajami happened to pass by there. Secretly, from the corner of his eye, that guide of the path Cast a glance at me for the blink of an eye. All these honors and a hundred times more, I found through the glory of that one glance. Whoever the eye of fortune falls upon, His soul, in a single breath, is invigorated. Until the glance of a spiritual man falls upon you, How can you gain knowledge of your own existence? If you sit in solitude for a long time, You cannot traverse the path without someone. A guide is needed; do not travel the path alone. Do not enter this ocean blindly. A guide is absolutely necessary for you on the path; In all affairs, he is a refuge for you. Since you can never distinguish the path from a well, Without a staff-bearer, how can you make your way? You have no eyes, and the path is not short; The guide is your scout on the path. Whoever enters the shadow of a master of fortune, Will never have any regret on the path. Whoever joined himself to a fortune, The thorns in his hand all became a bouquet of flowers.'
