The Tale of Masud and the Fisher Boy

Original content

English translation

One day, King Masud, by chance, Had become separated from his army. He was riding swiftly like the wind, alone without a companion, He saw a boy sitting by the sea. He had cast a fishing line into the depths of the sea. The King greeted him and sat down beside him. The boy sat there sorrowful, His heart drenched in grief and his soul weary. He said, 'O boy, why are you so grief-stricken? I have not seen anyone as mournful as you.' The boy said to him, 'O virtuous Emir, We are seven children, now fatherless. We have a mother left behind, She is very poor and left all alone. For the sake of a fish, every day I cast A net, and stay here until night. When I catch a fish with a hundred hardships, That is our sustenance until night, O Emir.' The King said, 'Do you wish, O dejected child, That I become your partner in this?' The boy agreed and became partners, The King cast the line into the sea. The boy's line caught the royal fortune, Inevitably, he caught a hundred fish that day. When the boy saw all those fish before him, He said, 'I am amazed at my own fortune! You have boundless fortune, O young man, That all these fish have fallen into your trap.' The King said, 'You would be bewildered, O boy, If you found out who your fisherman is. You are more fortunate than I am in this place, Because the King has become your fisherman.' He said this and mounted his steed, The boy said to him, 'Claim your share!' He said, 'Today I give you this, I will not take a share, Whatever catch falls tomorrow is mine. Tomorrow, you alone will be our catch, Inevitably, I will not give my catch to anyone.' The next day, when he returned to his palace, The King's thoughts went to his partner. A captain went and summoned the boy, The King seated his partner on the throne. Everyone said, 'O King, he is a beggar!' The King said, 'Whatever he is, he is our partner. Since we have accepted him, we cannot reject him.' He said this and made him a sultan like himself. A seeker asked that boy, 'From where did you finally attain this perfection?' He said, 'Joy arrived and lamentation passed, Because a man of fortune passed by me.'
