The Tale of a Man Whose Box of Gold Was Left Behind After His Death

Original content

English translation

A heedless man had a small box of gold, When he died, that box of gold remained from him. After a year, his son saw him in a dream, His face like a mouse and his two eyes full of tears. Then in that place where the gold had been hidden, A mouse was swiftly running around it. His son said that he asked him, 'Why did you come here? Tell me your state.' He said, 'I have hidden gold in this place, I do not know if anyone has found their way to it.' He said, 'But why is your form that of a mouse?' He said, 'Every heart in which the love of gold arose, Its form is this; and look at me, Take heed, and cast away the gold, O son!'
