The Tale of the Nightingale
Text and Translation
| The frenzied Nightingale entered, utterly intoxicated, From the perfection of love, neither non-existent nor existent. | |
| In every one of his thousand songs he held a meaning; Beneath every meaning, he held a world of secrets. | |
| He began to cry out in the secrets of meanings, Stilling the tongues of the birds from speech. | |
| He said: 'The secrets of love are sealed upon me; All through the night I repeat the litany of love. | |
| Is there no one like David, fallen in the path, That I may chant the Psalms of love most plaintively? | |
| The wailing within the reed-flute is from my speech; The low notes of the harp are from my mournful cry. | |
| The rose gardens are filled with clamor because of me; The boiling in the hearts of lovers is because of me. | |
| At every moment I reveal a different secret; At every hour I let out a different song. | |
| When love exerts its power upon my soul, Like the sea, my soul is thrown into turmoil. | |
| Whoever witnessed my turmoil lost their self-control; Though they came quite sober, they became drunk. | |
| When I find no confidant for a long year, I keep my peace and tell my secret to none. | |
| When my beloved, in the time of new spring, Scatters her musky fragrance upon the world, | |
| My heart is joyfully occupied with her; I solve my problems through her countenance. | |
| Yet when my beloved becomes invisible again, The agitated Nightingale becomes less vocal. | |
| For not everyone can grasp my secret; Without doubt, the Rose knows the Nightingale's secret. | |
| I am so drowned in the love of the Rose That I am utterly annihilated from my own existence. | |
| The passion for the Rose is sufficient in my mind, For the beautiful Rose is enough as my heart's desire. | |
| A Nightingale cannot endure the Simorgh; For a Nightingale, the love of a Rose is enough. | |
| When my beloved has a hundred petals, How could destitution be my lot? | |
| The Rose that blooms now so charmingly, Laughs happily at me from all sides. | |
| When the Rose emerges from beneath the veil, Its smile is made manifest toward me. | |
| How can a Nightingale be for a single night Devoid of love for such a smiling lip?' | |
| The Hoopoe said to him: 'O you who remain stuck in outward form! Boast no more of your elegance in love. | |
| The love of the Rose's face has placed many thorns in your path; It has taken effect upon you and set your condition. | |
| Though the Rose is indeed possessed of great beauty, Its fairness suffers decline within a week. | |
| Love for that which brings about decline Causes weariness in those who are perfect. | |
| Though the Rose's smile draws you into your task, Day and night it draws you into plaintive wailing. | |
| Pass beyond the Rose, for every new spring The Rose laughs at you, not with you; have some shame.' | |
