جواب هدهد / The Hoopoe's Answer

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

هدهد رهبر چنین گفت آن زمانکانک عاشق شد نه اندیشد ز جان
The leader Hoopoe spoke thus at that time:
'He who becomes a lover does not think of his life.
چون بترک جان بگوید عاشقیخواه زاهد باش خواهی فاسقی
Since a lover bids farewell to his life,
Whether he be an ascetic or a sinner.
چون دل تو دشمن جان آمدستجان برافشان ره به پایان آمدست
Since your heart has become the enemy of your life,
Scatter your life, the journey has come to an end.
سد ره جانست، جان ایثار کنپس برافکن دیده و دیدار کن
Life is the obstacle on the path, sacrifice your life,
Then cast your eyes upward and behold.
گر ترا گویند از ایمان برآیور خطاب آید ترا کز جان برآی
If they tell you to step out of faith,
Or if the call comes for you to step out of your life,
تو که باشی ، این و آن را برفشانترک ایمان گیر و جان را برفشان
Who are you? Scatter both this and that,
Abandon faith and scatter your life.
منکری گوید که این بس منکرستعشق گو از کفر و ایمان برترست
A denier might say that this is very abominable,
Tell him love is higher than infidelity and faith.
عشق را با کفر و با ایمان چه کارعاشقان را لحظه ای با جان چه کار
What does love have to do with infidelity and faith?
What do lovers have to do with their life for even a moment?
عاشق آتش بر همه خرمن زنداره بر فرقش نهند او تن زند
The lover sets fire to his whole harvest,
If they put a saw to his head, he remains silent.
درد و خون دل بباید عشق راقصهٔ مشکل بباید عشق را
Love requires pain and heart's blood,
Love requires a difficult tale.
ساقیا خون جگر در جام کنگر نداری درد از ما وام کن
O cupbearer, pour the liver's blood into the cup,
If you don't have pain, borrow it from us.
عشق را دردی بباید پرده سوزگاه جان را پرده در گه پرده دوز
Love requires a veil-burning pain,
Sometimes tearing the veil of the soul, sometimes sewing it.
ذرهٔ عشق از همه آفاق بهذرهٔ درد از همه عشاق به
A particle of love is better than all the horizons,
A particle of pain is better than all the lovers.
عشق مغز کاینات آمد مداملیک نبود عشق بی دردی تمام
Love has always been the marrow of the universe,
But love without pain is not complete.
قدسیان را عشق هست و درد نیستدرد را جز آدمی در خورد نیست
The holy angels have love but no pain,
None is worthy of pain except mankind.
هرکه را در عشق محکم شد قدمدر گذشت از کفر و از اسلام هم
Whoever's step became firm in love,
Passed beyond both infidelity and Islam.
عشق سوی فقر در بگشایدتفقر سوی کفر ره بنمایدت
Love opens the door to poverty for you,
Poverty shows you the way to infidelity.
چون ترا این کفر وین ایمان نمانداین تن تو گم شد و این جان نماند
When neither this infidelity nor this faith remains for you,
This body of yours is lost and this soul remains not.
بعد از آن مردی شوی این کار رامرد باید این چنین اسرار را
After that, you become a man for this task,
Manhood is needed for such secrets.
پای درنه همچو مردان و مترسدرگذار از کفر و ایمان و مترس
Step forward like men and fear not,
Pass beyond infidelity and faith and fear not.
چند ترسی، دست از طفلی بداربازشو چون شیرمردان پیش کار
How long will you fear? Cease your childishness,
Step forward like lion-hearted men to the task.
گر ترا صد عقبه ناگاه اوفتدباک نبود چون درین راه اوفتد
If a hundred obstacles suddenly befall you,
There is no fear when it happens on this path.'
