هدهد رهبر چنین گفت آن زمان
کانک عاشق شد نه اندیشد ز جان

چون بترک جان بگوید عاشقی
خواه زاهد باش خواهی فاسقی

چون دل تو دشمن جان آمدست
جان برافشان ره به پایان آمدست

سد ره جانست، جان ایثار کن
پس برافکن دیده و دیدار کن

گر ترا گویند از ایمان برآی
ور خطاب آید ترا کز جان برآی

تو که باشی ، این و آن را برفشان
ترک ایمان گیر و جان را برفشان

منکری گوید که این بس منکرست
عشق گو از کفر و ایمان برترست

عشق را با کفر و با ایمان چه کار
عاشقان را لحظه ای با جان چه کار

عاشق آتش بر همه خرمن زند
اره بر فرقش نهند او تن زند

درد و خون دل بباید عشق را
قصهٔ مشکل بباید عشق را

ساقیا خون جگر در جام کن
گر نداری درد از ما وام کن

عشق را دردی بباید پرده سوز
گاه جان را پرده در گه پرده دوز

ذرهٔ عشق از همه آفاق به
ذرهٔ درد از همه عشاق به

عشق مغز کاینات آمد مدام
لیک نبود عشق بی دردی تمام

قدسیان را عشق هست و درد نیست
درد را جز آدمی در خورد نیست

هرکه را در عشق محکم شد قدم
در گذشت از کفر و از اسلام هم

عشق سوی فقر در بگشایدت
فقر سوی کفر ره بنمایدت

چون ترا این کفر وین ایمان نماند
این تن تو گم شد و این جان نماند

بعد از آن مردی شوی این کار را
مرد باید این چنین اسرار را

پای درنه همچو مردان و مترس
درگذار از کفر و ایمان و مترس

چند ترسی، دست از طفلی بدار
بازشو چون شیرمردان پیش کار

گر ترا صد عقبه ناگاه اوفتد
باک نبود چون درین راه اوفتد

English translation

The leader Hoopoe spoke thus at that time: 'He who becomes a lover does not think of his life. Since a lover bids farewell to his life, Whether he be an ascetic or a sinner. Since your heart has become the enemy of your life, Scatter your life, the journey has come to an end. Life is the obstacle on the path, sacrifice your life, Then cast your eyes upward and behold. If they tell you to step out of faith, Or if the call comes for you to step out of your life, Who are you? Scatter both this and that, Abandon faith and scatter your life. A denier might say that this is very abominable, Tell him love is higher than infidelity and faith. What does love have to do with infidelity and faith? What do lovers have to do with their life for even a moment? The lover sets fire to his whole harvest, If they put a saw to his head, he remains silent. Love requires pain and heart's blood, Love requires a difficult tale. O cupbearer, pour the liver's blood into the cup, If you don't have pain, borrow it from us. Love requires a veil-burning pain, Sometimes tearing the veil of the soul, sometimes sewing it. A particle of love is better than all the horizons, A particle of pain is better than all the lovers. Love has always been the marrow of the universe, But love without pain is not complete. The holy angels have love but no pain, None is worthy of pain except mankind. Whoever's step became firm in love, Passed beyond both infidelity and Islam. Love opens the door to poverty for you, Poverty shows you the way to infidelity. When neither this infidelity nor this faith remains for you, This body of yours is lost and this soul remains not. After that, you become a man for this task, Manhood is needed for such secrets. Step forward like men and fear not, Pass beyond infidelity and faith and fear not. How long will you fear? Cease your childishness, Step forward like lion-hearted men to the task. If a hundred obstacles suddenly befall you, There is no fear when it happens on this path.'
