The Tale of Morteza's Compassion for the Enemy

Original content

English translation

When that wretched one at last, by fate, Suddenly struck that blow upon Morteza, They prepared a drink for Morteza; Morteza said: 'Where is my slayer? Give him the drink first, and then to me, For he will be my companion on the way.' They carried the drink to him, and he said: 'What a cruelty! Haydar wishes to kill me here with poison.' Morteza said: 'By the truth of the Creator, Had this wicked man drunk of my potion, I would not have set foot without him Before God in the Abode of Paradise.' Since that vile man killed Morteza, Morteza would not enter Heaven without him. When his compassion for the enemy was such, How could he ever bear malice toward the Siddiq? He who suffers so much grief for an enemy, How can anyone suspect him of enmity with his Atiq? The boundless world will never bring forth A friend to the Siddiq like Ali. How long will you say Morteza was oppressed, And deprived and barred from the Caliphate? Since Ali is the Lion of God and the crown of the head, One cannot commit injustice against a lion, O youth!'
