The Tale of a King Who Was Very Beautiful

Text and Translation

There was a king who was very beautiful,
In the world of beauty, without match or equal.
The kingdom of the world was the book of his secrets,
His face was a sign in goodness.
I know of no one who found the courage
Who could benefit from his beauty.
The face of the world was filled with his clamor,
The people's passion for him went beyond limit.
Sometimes he would ride a black horse into the street,
He would lower a rose-colored veil over his face.
Whoever looked toward that veil,
They would sever his innocent head from his body.
And whoever uttered his name on their tongue,
They would cut off his tongue immediately.
And if someone thought of union with him,
They would lose their mind and soul over that impossibility.
There were days when a thousand would die
From the sorrow of his love; such is love and such is the affair.
If someone saw his beauty openly,
They would give up their soul and die miserably.
Dying of love for the face of that beloved
Is better than a hundred long lives.
No one had patience for him for a moment,
Nor could anyone endure him.
The people were constantly in this quest,
No patience with him, nor without him, oh wonder!
If anyone had the endurance for a moment,
The king would show his face openly.
But since no one had the endurance to see him,
They had no pleasure except in hearing of him.
Since no one emerged worthy of him,
All were dying, their hearts full of pain for him.
The king ordered a mirror to be made immediately,
So that one could look into the mirror.
He reflected his face from the mirror,
Everyone found a trace of his face.
If you hold the beauty of the beloved dear,
Oh heart! Know that it is the mirror for seeing him.
Win over the heart and see his beauty,
Make a mirror of the soul, see his glory.
Your king is in the palace of glory,
The palace is bright from the sun of that beauty.
See your king in your heart,
See consciousness in the resulting particle.
Every garment that has come to the plain
Has come as the shadow of the beautiful Simorgh.
If the Simorgh shows you its beauty,
You will see the shadow as the Simorgh without doubt.
Whether there were forty birds or thirty birds,
Whatever you saw was the shadow of the Simorgh.
Since the shadow is not separate from the Simorgh,
If you speak of separation, it would not be proper.
Since both are together, seek them anew,
Pass beyond the shadow and then seek the secret.
Since you have become so lost in a shadow,
When will any wealth reach you from the Simorgh?
If an opening of the door appears to you,
You will see the sun within the shadow.
You will constantly see the shadow lost in the sun,
You will see only the sun yourself, and that is all.
