The Tale of the Partridge
Text and Translation
| The partridge arrived, stepping very joyfully and gracefully, Rebellious and intoxicated, she arrived from the mine. | |
| Coming with a red beak and dressed in silk, Her blood boiling from her eyes. | |
| Sometimes she would cut a belt without a sword, Sometimes she would fit in before the sword. | |
| She said: 'I have constantly wandered in the mine, I have wandered abundantly over the jewels. | |
| I have constantly been with sword and belt, So that I could be the commander of jewels. | |
| The love of jewels set a fire in my heart, This fire is enough of a good harvest for me. | |
| When the heat of this fire rears its head, It turns pebbles to blood inside me. | |
| Have you seen a fire that, when it took effect, Turned stone to blood, and did so without delay? | |
| I have remained between stone and fire, I have remained both idle and agitated. | |
| I eat pebbles in the heat and burning, Heart full of fire, I sleep on the stone. | |
| Open your eyes, O my companions! Look at my eating and sleeping, after all. | |
| He who slept on a stone and ate stone, Why must one fight with such a person? | |
| The heart is wounded by a hundred sorrows in this hardship, Because my love of jewels bound me to the mountain. | |
| Whoever loves anything besides jewels, The kingdom of that thing is fleeting. | |
| The kingdom of jewels has an eternal order, Its soul is constantly connected to the mountain. | |
| I am the assayer of the mountain and a person of jewels, I am not for a moment without sword and belt. | |
| Since the jewel is permanently in the sword, Therefore I constantly seek the jewel in the sword. | |
| I found no jewel like the jewel, Nor found anything more jewel-like than the jewel. | |
| Since the way of the Simorgh is a difficult way, My foot is in the stone, the jewel is in the mud. | |
| When will I reach the Simorgh, strong of heart? Hand on head, foot in mud, when will I arrive? | |
| Like fire, I cannot bear the burning of the stone, Either I die or I grasp the jewel. | |
| My jewel must become manifest, Where does a person without a jewel come in handy?' | |
| The hoopoe said to her: 'O you who are all color like a jewel! How long will you limp, how long will you bring me lame excuses? | |
| Your foot and beak are full of heart's blood, You are left behind by a stone, without a jewel. | |
| What is the essence of a jewel? A colored stone, You are so iron-hearted from the madness for a stone. | |
| If its color does not remain, it will be a stone, He is without worth who is caught up in a color. | |
| Whoever has a scent of truth, did not want a color, Because a person of true essence did not want a stone.' | |
