The Tale of the Duck

Text and Translation

The duck emerged from the water with absolute purity,
In the midst of the gathering, wearing the finest of garments.
It said, "In both worlds, no one can report,
Anyone purer or with a purer face than me.
At every moment I perform a proper ablution,
Then I spread my prayer rug upon the water.
Since someone like me stands upon the water,
There remains no doubt about my miracles.
I am the ascetic of the birds with pure judgment,
Forever my garment and my dwelling are pure.
I find no profit in the world without water,
For my birth and my existence were in the water.
Although I held a world of sorrow in my heart,
I washed it from my heart, for water was my companion.
Water is constantly in my stream here,
How can I find my desire on dry land?
Since my affairs are so entwined with water,
How can I withdraw from the midst of the water?
Everything that exists is forever alive through water,
Thus, one cannot wash one's hands of water.
How would I know how to traverse the path of the valley?
Because I cannot fly with the Simorgh.
He whose focus is entirely on water,
How can he find his desire from the Simorgh?"
The hoopoe said to him: "O you who are pleased with water!
Around your soul, water has become like fire.
Sweet sleep has carried you away amidst the water,
A drop of water came and carried your honor away.
Water is meant for every unwashed face,
If you have an unwashed face, seek water.
How long will it be for you, like clear water,
To see the face of every unwashed one?"
