گفت ایاز خاص را محمود خواند
تاج دارش کرد و بر تختش نشاند

گفت شاهی دادمت، لشگر تراست
پادشاهی کن که این کشور تراست

آن همی خواهم که تو شاهی کنی
حلقه در گوش مه و ماهی کنی

هرکه آن بشنود از خیل و سپاه
جمله را شد چشم از آن غیرت سیاه

هر کسی می گفت شاهی با غلام
در جهان هرگز نکرد این احترام

لیک آن ساعت ایاز هوشیار
می گریست از کار سلطان زار زار

جمله گفتندش که تو دیوانه ای
می ندانی وز خرد بیگانه ای

چون به سلطانی رسیدی ای غلام
چیست چندین گریه، بنشین شادکام

داد ایاز آن قوم را حالی جواب
گفت بس دورید از راه صواب

نیستی آگه که شاه انجمن
دور می اندازدم از خویشتن

می دهد مشغولیم تا من ز شاه
بازمانم دور مشغول سپاه

گر به حکم من کند ملک جهان
من نگردم غایب از وی یک زمان

هرچ گوید آن توانم کرد و بس
لیک ازو دوری نجویم یک نفس

من چه خواهم کرد ملک و کار او
ملکت من بس بود دیدار او

گر تو مرد طالبی و حق شناس
بندگی کردن درآموز از ایاس

ای به روز و شب معطل مانده
همچنان بر گام اول مانده

هر شبی از بهر تو ای بوالفضول
می کنند از اوج جباری نزول

تو ز جای خود چو مردی بی ادب
برنگیری گام، نه روز و نه شب

آمدند از اوج عزت پیش باز
تو ز پس رفتی و کردی احتراز

ای دریغا نیستی تو مرد این
با که بتوان گفت آخر درد این

تا بهشت و دوزخت در ره بود
جان توزین رازکی آگه بود

چون ازین هر دو برون آیی تمام
صبح این دولت برونت آید ز شام

گلشن جنت نه این اصحاب راست
زانک علیون ذوی الالباب راست

تو چو مردان، این بدین ده آن بدان
درگذر، نه دل بدین ده نه بدان

چون ز هر دو درگذشتی فرد تو
گر زنی باشی تو باشی مرد تو

English translation

It is said that Mahmud called the favored Ayaz, Crowned him, and sat him on his throne. He said: 'I have given you sovereignty; the army is yours; Rule, for this country is yours. What I want is for you to be king, And to make the moon and the fish wear your ring of obedience.' Whoever heard this from the army and the retinue, Their eyes turned black with envy. Everyone was saying: 'In the world, no king Has ever shown such respect to a slave.' But at that very moment, the wise Ayaz Was weeping bitterly over the Sultan's action. They all said to him: 'You are mad! You do not understand, and you are a stranger to intellect. Since you have achieved kingship, O slave, Why all this weeping? Sit down and be happy!' Ayaz gave them an immediate answer, Saying: 'You are very far from the right path. You are unaware that the king of the assembly Is casting me away from himself. He occupies me so that I may remain far from the king, Busy with the army. Even if the kingdom of the world is under my command, I would not be absent from him for a single moment. I can do whatever he says, and that is all, But I will not seek distance from him for a single breath. What do I want with his kingdom and its affairs? His presence is kingdom enough for me. If you are a seeker and a knower of truth, Learn how to be a servant from Ayaz. O you who remain idle day and night, Still stuck on the very first step. Every night, for your sake, O meddlesome one, They descend from the height of majesty. Yet, like an ill-mannered man, you do not take a step From your place, neither by day nor by night. They came forward from the height of honor to meet you, But you retreated and avoided them. Alas, you are not the man for this; To whom can one express the pain of this? As long as heaven and hell lie in your path, How can your soul be aware of this secret? When you fully emerge from both of these, The morning of this state will rise for you from the night. The garden of Paradise is not for these companions, Because the highest station is for the possessors of intellect. Like true men, give this to this one and that to that one; Pass beyond, and give your heart to neither. When you have passed beyond both and become solitary, Even if you were a woman, you would be a true man.'
