The Speech of a Self-Sufficient Elder

Original content

English translation

A man said to a man from among the initiates, The veil was lifted from the world of mysteries. An unseen voice immediately said: 'O elder, quickly, Ask for whatever you want and receive it quickly!' The elder said: 'I have seen that the prophets Were constantly afflicted with trials. Wherever there was greater suffering and affliction, The prophets had all of it in front of them. Since affliction was the share of the prophets, How can comfort reach this stranger elder? I want neither honor nor humiliation; I wish You would leave me in my own helplessness. Since the share of the great is pain and suffering, How can there be a treasure for the lesser ones? The prophets were the leaders of the great struggle; I do not have the endurance, leave me alone.' Whatever I said from myself, what is the use? Until a task actually falls upon you, of what use is it? Although you have fallen into the sea of danger, Like a partridge whose wings and feathers have fallen, If you were aware of the sea monster and the depths, How would you desire to traverse such a path? At first, you remain restless because of your imagination; Once you fall in, how will you bring your soul to safety?
