The Burden of Spiritual Trials in the Speech of an Elder
In Attar's 'Conference of the Birds', the poem 'The Speech of a Self-Sufficient Elder' explores the daunting reality of spiritual trials (bala) on the divine path. The narrative centers on an elder who, when offered anything he desires by a divine voice, reflects on the constant suffering and tribulations endured even by the prophets. Recognizing his own profound weakness, he pleads to be left alone in his helplessness rather than face the heavy burdens required for spiritual greatness. This allegory highlights the immense hardships inherent in the spiritual journey and the overwhelming nature of the Valley of Independence (Esteghna).
