The Allegory of Abu Ali Daqqaq and the Premature Mention of Separation in Mosibat Nameh

In this allegory from Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the Sufi master Abu Ali Daqqaq visits a devoted disciple who has long awaited him. Overwhelmed by anxiety, the disciple immediately asks when the master will depart. Abu Ali Daqqaq reproaches him, explaining that bringing up separation before the union has truly begun reveals a spiritual deficiency: an inability to be present in the moment of divine or spiritual proximity due to preoccupation with its loss.
