In Farid al-Din Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the story of the man following a beautiful woman serves as an allegory for the soul's response to Divine manifestation (tajalli). The woman's act of revealing her face, compared to the sun, symbolizes the overwhelming beauty of the Divine that intoxicates the seeker and renders the ego powerless. The dialogue at the end of the tale explains that such manifestation is intended to inspire a love so absolute that it leads to the lover's annihilation (fana), whereby the individual self vanishes and only the eternal presence of the Beloved remains.
