In this allegory from Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the Sufi mystic Ibrahim ibn Adham covers his face after completing his prayers. He explains that he does so out of fear that his prayer is unworthy and will be thrown back at him by the Independent One (God). This story illustrates the Sufi theme of spiritual humility, the fear of self-righteousness, and the deep awe (haybah) of the mystic before the absolute majesty and independence of the Divine.
