The Allegory of Jesus's Needle and Ascension in Hadiqat al-Haqiqah

In Section 47 of Sanai's Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, the story of Jesus (Ruhollah) and the needle serves as an allegory for the necessity of absolute detachment from the material world. As Jesus ascends to the heavens, he is stopped at the fourth heaven and searched by angels. They find only a single needle in his patched garment, which he had kept to mend his clothes. Sanai uses this narrative to illustrate that even the most minute reliance on earthly possessions represents a lingering worldly attachment, which can halt a spiritual seeker's ultimate ascent to the divine.
