In the Elahi-Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar recounts the story of Joseph placing a measuring cup in his brother Benjamin's baggage and accusing him of theft. Attar uses this narrative as a profound allegory for the fall and divine role of Iblis (Satan). Just as Joseph's apparent cruelty toward Benjamin was driven by a hidden wisdom, God cast Iblis out and cursed him to serve a secret divine function. According to Attar, Iblis stands as a gatekeeper at the threshold of the divine court, holding the spear of God's wrath. A seeker cannot enter the divine presence without first seeking refuge from Iblis (by reciting the Ta'awwudh: 'I seek refuge in God from the accursed Satan'). This illustrates how divine wrath, and its guardian, act as a necessary gateway and test before a seeker can reach divine mercy.
